The house

Renovated down to the skylight.

The house was rebuilt with the kind of care you notice on the third day: a floating maple staircase lit from above by an oversized skylight, wide wood floors, a gas fireplace set into slate, and a kitchen a family of six can actually cook in.

The main floor runs open from front to back: the kitchen with its long island, a live-edge dining table that seats the whole house, and the living room around the fire. Two balconies look onto the street and the trees. One floor up: three bedrooms, a proper office, and the primary suite.

Air conditioning and two heat pumps keep it cool in July and warm in January. There is a laundry room, a keypad at the door, and a parking spot at the back, which in the Plateau counts as a luxury.

The primary suite

A bathroom guests mention more than the fireplace.

A freestanding tub under a marble wall. An oversized steam shower with two rain heads and built-in speakers. A double vanity, and a door that closes on the toilet. The king bedroom opens onto its own balcony.

The Plateau

Two minutes to the métro. Everything else on foot.

The Plateau is the Montréal people picture: brick triplexes with iron spiral staircases, a café on every corner, and Avenue du Mont-Royal's restaurants a short walk south. It is also where Montrealers actually live.

The house sits on a quiet residential street with a small grocery and a café steps away, Parc Laurier around the corner, and Mile End's bagel ovens within a walk. Guests come back saying they walked everywhere, including at night, and never once needed a car.

If you bring one anyway, there is a free parking spot behind the house. If you would rather not, two adult bicycles are yours for the stay.

“This home is beautiful, and the location is excellent. Within walking distance of numerous restaurants, cafés, and grocery stores, yet the neighborhood is peaceful and quiet. We walked everywhere, including at night, and always felt safe. We especially loved the master shower with its steam feature and built-in music speakers.”
